The Dreaded File Folder superimposed by a blinking “?”

High Folks !

My 2012 iMac (27” screen), just started showing me the dreaded file folder superimposed with a blinking ?…..when opening.

I vaguely remember that meaning that the computer can’t find the Startup Disk….. Am I remembering that correctly ?

I also vaguely remember that there are a series of keys you can hold down while restarting that might restore access to the Startup Disk, right ?

If your Mac starts up to a question mark - Apple Support

Based on the age of this Mac, it seems likely that the internal boot drive has failed. But follow the instructions in the link above to see if you can recover the drive. If not, best course forward is to obtain a new Mac and migrate your files to it from a recent backup.
