Contacts creating a dupe when editing a contact card

On our MBP 2017 running macOS Ventura 13.6.3, there are many duplicate cards in the Contacts app. Find duplicates does not find them. And, a new duplicate is created each time we edit a card.

Already tried these steps that did not fix problem:

1) Booted in Safe Mode

2) In the "~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook" folder I deleted the following 3 files then rebooted: AddressBook-v22.abcddb

AddressBook-v22.abcddb-shm

AddressBook-v22.abcddb-wal

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.6

I don't know if deleting those files in the iCloud Sources folder would reset it or not; I've never tried for a server-based account, only the On My Mac account.

Removing Contacts from iCloud and then re-enabling it will rebuild it. When you do turn it off, don't opt to keep the contacts locally or you will get duplicates when you turn it back on.

What type of account is it?

Those three files you removed are only relevant to an "On My Mac" account, not any address service account like iCloud's. Those have their own data stored inside the Sources folder.

Hi, these contacts are in a icloud.com account linked to an iPhone and a Macbook Pro.

Are there icloud index files in a Sources that I should delete to force them to be re-built? Or, is there another thing to try?

Can you please clarify? When you say remove contacts from the cloud and don't save a copy locally, then re-enable contacts; it sounds like the contacts will be lost. How are they preserved if they are removed and not saved? Thank you.
