How do I update a card with a new expiry and cvv when Apple won’t let me remove the old card in the first place?

I cannot update my card with a new expiration date, nor can I remove my card. I get a warning that my card cannot be used because it has expired. Fine. I have the same card but now with an updated expiration date. I cannot edit the new expiration date, nor can I remove my card (because it still has purchases pending).
