Why update to transfer docs from OS X to iOS?

It's becoming frustrating that "updates" are required when I merely want to transfer docs from my Mac to my iOS devices. Way more frustrating when it says "update required" and my meeting is starting in an hour. Never had this problem back in the day.

Is this merely forcing us to go the cloud?

There has to be some level of "compatibility" between the version of software in either device.

You are not telling us which updates are in question here.

You can certainly use AirDrop to transfer files, and it does not have to be on same year versions.

For example, I can transfer via AirDrop from my mac current OS (Sonoma 14.2.1) to my old iPhone, which can't be upgraded past iOS 15.* (so two years behind now). I think I can even do it to an older iPhone, running iOS 12.* (though I am not sure if I did this in Sonoma or perhaps Ventura).

But of course if I were to resurrect an old iPhone 4S (which may be running iOS 9 or earlier), it probably wouldn't work.

That’s still part of my point. Apple offers the ability to transfer using a usb cable or wireless LAN but then hamstrings each device with the next xx.x.x update. Literally, they won’t communicate with each other until each has the next security update or whatever. Very frustrating when I’m called into a meeting and we’re stuck waiting for the next security update. It’s only a usb transfer

I can transfer most things, but that requires a cloud service. I can't, however, transfer Filemaker documents via the cloud and this is the biggest issue. I need this to work immediately sometimes and the "security" updates or whatever each minor update is, stops my ability to transfer docs.

Doesn't matter which OS/iOS I'm using or which Mac/phone/iPad. One the updates are done, which can sometimes take an hour, everything works fine. My point still is, why do security updates impede my ability to merely transfer files between each device. I can plug in a USB external drive and read/write to it all day long'

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to have to live with this.
