"Paste and match but retain style"?

Here's what I'm trying to do.

I'm copying rich text from one Pages document into another.

But I want two things to happen when I do so: 1. Match the style (e.g., Body) of the target document, but also 2. retain any of the special formatting (e.g., italics) from the source document.

Pages already has "Past and Match Style" under the Edit menu, but that doesn't retain any of the special formatting from the source document. iBooks author apparently had "Paste and Retain Style" but that application, sadly, has been deprecated in favor of Pages (sigh).

So, is there a way in Pages to make both things (1 and 2, above) happen simultaneously?

Not quite it.

What I want is a combination of 1 & 2. Thus, the target document retains its paragraph style, but the text copied from the source document retains any special formatting.

Format > Copy Style simply copies the source text as-is, and then Format > Paste Style copies that source text as-in into the target document.

That's not what I'm looking for.

You can only achieve 1 & 2 by initially selecting target text in the first document's paragraph style before you paste the selected content Style from the other document. The character style of the selected text in the recipient document is changed to the character style of the copied paragraph style from document 2 without changing the recipient paragraph style.

Had you placed the cursor at the end of the paragraph style in document 1 without any text selection, a Paste Style would format that preceding paragraph style to the paragraph style from document 2.
