I often want to save a PDF or other file directly to the "On my iPhone" location in the Files app -- useful if I'm in a location where I need to access that file and there is no WiFi or cell signal to be had. I'm just not seeing updated information (iOS 17.2) on how make sure a file ends up stored locally and not just in iCloud.

Oh, taking another look, I see that for saving email attachments to Files, the default is iCloud, but if I select "Browse", then I have the option of saving directly to "On my iPhone"..... Would be nice to be able to change the default, but at least there is a fairly direct way of saving files to the phone itself.

You can set where Safari saves the downloads. Go to Settings > Safari and change the Downloads field to point to "On my iPhone".
Thanks 6x6. But what about when you want to save a file attached to an email directly to "On my iPhone" rather than to iCloud? Is that something that can be done? I'm not seeing a setting I can change.
