Audio recorder on my iPhone Messages app turns itself on

Since the 17 update, when I am in messages and I finish sending a text the audio message will start recording on its own without me selecting anything. I do not mean dictation. With the 17 update you now have the option to hit the plus and you get the options like photos, camera and that’s where the option to send an audio message is now. It is no longer on the text box like it use to be but yet it still pops up randomly and starts recording. Does anyone else have this issue or is there a shortcut on the message screen that I am somehow tapping that I have not figured out yet? Thanks

I have been very annoyed by this occurring, and I FINALLY FOUND THE WAY TO FIX IT!!

Settings > Messages > under “Audio Messages” near the bottom, deactivate “Raise to Listen”

— it’s unclear because the description makes it seem to be about listening and replying to an audio message that’s been sent, BUT IT APPLIES TO THE ‘AUTO-RECORD’ NUISANCE!

Enjoy!

Dr_JY You rock!! I have dug into this issue awhile back and did not find any solution. The steps you give seem to have worked. The language around the setting doesn't even make sense why you would need to raise the phone to your head to reply to an audio message you could keep it at arms length. I bet some people have gotten into some trouble after sending a message and having a recording kick off afterwards and then accidentally sending that.

This happened to me recently too. Had been reading a text message I’d received out loud to a friend and then closed my case. When I opened it again later I discovered it had recorded my conversation afterwards and was playing it all back. Having never used this function before I didn’t know how to stop it. Eventually was able to delete it but what I’d like to know is if the person who’s text page I was on at the time has heard any of the conversation

Thank you for posting this Dr_JY, this has been bothering me for a year at least and I thought it was some hidden gesture having to do with my hand being seen by the camera or lidar or some kind of bug. Never realized this setting was there. It was one of the few things that was a regular annoyance with my iPhone. Apple: Please prompt people about this the first time they trigger it and ask people if they want the setting to be on or off. And/or default it to off for new users. This will increase your customer satisfaction scores.

NO MATTER WHAT I DO I CANNOT GET THIS TO HAPPEN ON PURPOSE BUT IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WITHOUT ANY SORT OF DISCERNIBLE INPUT FROM ME. I have tried “raising” the phone when messages is open in an innumerable number of ways and yet it will not work. Then when I stop trying and begin to put the phone down or into my pocket I hear “beep” and it has started recording automatically. WTAF.

Audio message was on and I had no idea!!! I am absolutely outraged! This cost me my job! I put my phone in my pocket and the audio message turned on. I was having a personal/ private conversation with a co-worker.. the whole time it was recording my conversation… then actually sent the conversation to the person. I didn’t even see the audio as it deleted itself from my text messages but not before actually sending it to the person.. the only reason I was aware was when I received an irate text message back stating what was said in the conversation I thought was private.. this was brought to my bosses attention and the result was that I and the other person I was speaking to were fired. Tell me how Apple plans on fixing that?
