how to select iCloud photos on a Mac

I know that I can select multiple iCloud photos on a Mac by holding the shift key, but when I do that for multiple photos, I get all the photos in between as well. How do I select random ones? That is, suppose I have ten photos in iCloud. How do I select JUST photos #2, 5, and 8? Also, how do you DEselect an individual photo?

You can select non-consecutive items by holding down the Command key while selecting them.

Note : first press command key , click on first photo ( don't release the command key ) , again click on Third photo , still don't release the command key again click on fifth photo see the articles Select items on your Mac screen - Apple

Nope. Nothing there that pertains. BTW, I can do command-shift-4 to do screen shots. So the OS/machine is paying attention to the command key. Also, the command key works for random photo selection in Photos. Heh. It work fine with iCloud using Safari on this machine. Firefox is messing it up. Need to ask in Firefox support. Hoo boy. That doesn't work for me. If I click on and select picture 1, and hold down the command key as I click on picture 3, I just get picture 3 selected. Picture 1 gets deselected. If I hold down shift+command and click on 3 after selecting 1, I get pictures 1,2, and 3 selected. How do I JUST select 1 and 3??? Is my command key not working? I've got two command keys on this keyboard, and it does the same thing for both.

Nope. We have a problem. When I click on the second picture, holding down the command key, the first picture gets unselected. I tried another keyboard. Same thing. For that matter, I tried changing the command key to be the control key in Keyboard->Modifier Keys, and it STILL doesn't work. If my keyboard command key were inoperable, that would be a workaround. But it doesn't work. Now, very strangely, it all works on another machine, with a different OS. I'm using Monterey through Firefox. Can the command key somehow get set to be ignored?
