Folder with question mark at start up

I ran the first aid function in my utility disk and the result came up that everything is fine but then after I re-start,as prompted it still shows the folder with question mark

How to fix a folder with question mark on my MacBook Air? Every time I open my Mac there’s a folder with a question mark. I’ve tried opening recovery mode and deleting everything in my disk and reinstalling macOS Sierra. However I only have 120.77 out of 120.99 available storage and everytime I try to install MacOS it fails [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Folder with question mark showing I have MacBook Air 13 from 2014, i tried factory resetting from disk utility, forgot what I erased already it had HD on the end of the name, following the steps on apple support. Tried to install a new MACOS that is the Catalina. It would not install. So I restarted the computer and now it’s showing a folder with a question mark in there. Did I just mess up? i haven’t been able to use the laptop in a few months anyway so there’s no rush but I don’t want to just scrap it.
