Stream from NAS directly to AppleTV, bypassing iTunes

We have 2 apple TV's in our house, 2 iMacs, all located in different rooms.

One iMac has the master iTunes (TV app) library for all  media.

All media files are on our NAS. All media files (movies & TV shows) already contain all full metadata.

When we want to watch anything, we have to make sure the primary  iMac is awake and that the NAS is also

awake... PITA with everything in different rooms.

What I would like to do is have either AppleTV stream media directly from NAS, bypassing the need to go to another  room to ensure that main iMac/TV app is running.

My Configuration:

2019 iMac, OS Monterey 12.7

2012 iMac, OS Catalina 10.15.7

NAS Synology DS 213J (original DSM 4, very old)

NAS file config:

·     NAS>Media>Movies. (all movies stored in this folder, no sub-folders)

·     NAS>Media>TV Shows. All TV series stored in this folder, no sub-folder,

file naming convention is Series Name Sn-n.mp4 eg. Castle S1-1.mp4  or  Castle S2-1.mp4

Note: iTunes/TV accepts this naming convention, but other media apps like Infuse/MRMC seem to require format "Series Name Snn-Enn" and sub-folders for each series/year to allow them to acquire metadata (that already exists.) This would require serious effort to rename several thousand TV episodes on my NAS.

So basically, it seems like I need a NAS-hosted server app and an AppleTV client app, but ideally without the need to rename and re-folderize my existing files.

All advice appreciated, TIA.

Download the app called infuse onto your Apple TV with a little bit of set up time you can stream to your hearts content I have my NAS in the Basement and I can do all of my video files and audio files and pictures through the infuse application, it gives you icons of all the movies it will also sort out recently added it's a wonderful program I've been using for two years. I can store files in any video format, usually .MKV and infuse converts on the fly to something that can be played on the Apple TV. Excellent video quality – I don't work for the company or anything but I think it's wonderful and I couldn't live without it

personally I just use the synology apps on my appletv to access the media stored on my synology nas, and if the app can't understand some video formats I use the vlc player on the appletv it plays the rest

there are also plex and kodi apps for appletv I believe

so non of my computers needs to be running for me to access my nas media

Solved!

No longer any need to have iTunes or TV app running.

Since at least Mac OS Catalina, Home Sharing from iTunes has been replaced by System Prefs>Sharing>media sharing.

Either Apple TV can choose the library and select/play a movie.

I'm not sure exactly how it occurs:

  • does connection attempt make a low-level 'awake from sleep' on the Mac which hosts the library, then a 'wake-on-lan' call to the NAS? ... or ...
  • does Apple TV cache the library and access the NAS directly?

Either way, I'm happy it now works... hope this helps someone else in this situation.
