Apple Books App crashing

iPad IOS 17.2 up to date on a gen 3 or 4 iPad with cellular but no sim card

The Apple Books app has decided to crash immediately after starting.

I have tried:

updating iPad software

removing books app

hard restart

downloading current version from App Store after restart

wifi off and on

airplane mode on and off

It was crashing before the update to 17.2, and continues in 17.2

Can anyone suggest a way forward?
