WhatsApp backup vs iCloud backup

My WhatsApp doesn't want to back up through the app! I've tried everything, but nothing works. My question is, do I have to make a backup from the app, or will iCloud do the job? Also, did I disable the backup from the app itself?

As far as I know the data which is backed up on iCloud is never backed up on iTunes. WhatsApp backup is taken on iCloud always.

WhatsApp Backup is taken on iCloud and while restoring, it verifies your Phone number.

The phone number used for backing up and restoring must be the same. You can't restore the chat history from another WhatsApp account.
Because backups are tied to individual phone numbers, it is possible to have backups for multiple WhatsApp accounts stored in the same iCloud account.
