Do you need a wired keyboard?

Trying to reset with recovery but not 100% if the keyboard is connect at start up.

What does this combo do: CMD and Power Button? What happens when you hit CMD + Power Button combo? I was reading various suggestions on this forum for getting a new wireless keyboard going when you cannot type in the password to log in. After trying this combo I have not been able to boot up the computer. It hangs up halfway through the gray screen with Apple icon.

It's always good to have a wired keyboard around for troubleshooting. It doesn't need to be anything expensive.
