Old Imac Issues

I bought this Imac from someone on Facebook Marketplace it is an

2011 iMac 21.5 inch and the issue is that it is in a loop every time I turn it on it is on Utilities and you can't bypass it because of the starter disk. I figured out a way to Internet Recovery but it requires a Firmware password and heck I don't have that. Is there anything I can do??

If it has a firmware password that you don't know, I believe the only option (short of recycling it) would be to take it in to Apple or an Apple Authorized Repair Facility.

Apple considers a Mac that old to be "obsolete" in terms of hardware repair service, so I do not know if they reset firmware passwords on them any more. Also, they might want more proof of ownership than you have.

You can try to get it working and I wish you luck but buying a used Mac is tough unless you as a buyer are pretty sophisticated when buying from unknown sellers. The reason why is Macs MUST be properly setup for resale or giving to anew owner. Most Mac’s don’t have this process done which means the new owner almost always ends up with a brick or a computer plagued with issues. In short never buy from sources such as:

  • Ebay
  • Amazon (used Macs)
  • Marketplace
  • Craigslist
  • Your local computer store
  • Even someone you may know

Only buy used Macs from trusted sources such as Macsales.com or Apple Refurbished Store.

Best of luck!
