What is Big Sur and is there an alternative for my MacBook?

Hi, I have a Macbook Air. It came with Catalina OS. I had "update automatically' ticked. but it never did so, & all was going well so I didn't interfere. Then recently one of my 3rd party Apps declared it could not work because my Safari version was out of date. So I did update to Big Sur. (this did not cure the problem with my app which have worked around by using my iPad) However there are many and varied issues with other apps such that I wish I had never migrated. What Is BIG SUR? Is there an alternative? if so how do I change? Needless to say I would wish to do whatever is required at no cost. Any help out there?

Mostly you just need a more modern Browser than Safari on Catalina, Mojave, or High Sierra like Firefox or Brave.

Thanks to dialabrain…

Firefox 115 is now the current version. runs in High Sierra.

119.0.1 is now the current version and requires 10.15 or later.
