The front-facing camera on my iPad (7th gen, IOS 17.1.2) has suddenly stopped working. On Zoom or FaceTime it just shows a black screen, and when I try switching between the two cameras the same thing happens with the front-facing camera, but the rear-facing camera does not seem to be affected.
What can I do about this? All help gratefully received please!

Hello. Yes, I did, eventually - but not in the way I'd expected.
After trying the suggestions above with no success, I booked an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar. They ran some diagnostic tests and discovered that it was a hardware problem, which they couldn't (or wouldn't) fix. In short, the camera itself had failed.
So I found a local independent computer repair guy who was able to replace the camera. It's worked fine ever since. I can't remember exactly how much the repair cost, but it was definitely below £50.

if it was me then I would
try restarting the ios device Force restart iPhone - Apple Support and check if it resolved it
if it did not
then I would try Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support -
if that did not resolve it then I would
contact apple about repair Contact - Official Apple Support
