I was actually hoping your Apple ID was not an iCloud email address. That is the main drawback of using the iCloud email as your Apple ID. If there was a Trusted Phone number set on your Apple ID, it may be possible to have a reset link sent to that phone number instead of the Apple ID email. It may also be possible to remove the Activation Lock using this link to support a support request, but in the past it also required documentation that you do not have, so that is why attempting to reset you password may be the better solution.

I think your best option is to contact Apple directly using the contact Apple link. They will be able to look at your account and give you the most precise option based on the information they have on your account and the information you can provide..
