Airport Express Firmware Update Error

Airport Express (A1264) running 7.6.4 shows "update needed" (Red Alert in Airport Utility) but attempting update gives -6,727 error. I've done a full reset and the issue persists. Two questions: What does the required update provide over 7.6.4 (security improvements? performance improvements?) and how can I successfully perform this update?

AirPort

OK, my A1264 works fine on Macs running Big Sur and Sonoma. The A1264 was already set at 7.8.1, but I had no trouble rolling back the firmware to earlier versions and then moving back up to 7.8.1 from either Mac. Try this:

Open AirPort Utility to display the AirPort Express on the screen.

Click on the AirPort Express to display a smaller window with info about the Express.

Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on "Version" and choose a different version of firmware between 7.6.4 and 7.8.1 to see if you can update to the intermediate version of firmware.

If you can, then try updating to 7.8.1.

If things still don't work for you, I don't have an answer
