Find My app can’t connect to lost iPods, but works just fine once I’ve found them.

‘Find My’ app works perfectly when I HAVE my iPods in hand. But when I actually NEED TO FIND THEM, that’s when ‘Find My’ can’t get past the “connecting” step, ever. It’s as if the airpods are asleep in their case until I manually wake them, because the precise moment when I find them myself and pick them up, all of a sudden the Find My app wants to take credit, the AirPods start chirping in my hand, etc. *Too little too late every single time.* But I can’t find any solutions to this unique problem anywhere online. - Yes, AirPods are always charged, Bluetooth is always on, and AirPods are already connected/listed as one of my devices.

While I have extensive experience using Find My to locate individual AirPods (small ears…I should rename these guys AWOLPods), I had never tried to use it to find them while in the case. So I tested it out and had the same results you describe. Then I did a little research. See below.

While I see the obvious utility of being able to play the sound from the (small and easily misplaced) case itself, it appears this is not a standard feature available for most airPod models. The most likely rationale is that the case 1) wasn’t equipped to produce sound and 2) muffles the sound produced by enclosed devices too much to be useful.

Your best alternative will probably be using the map. Let me know if you find that works for you – that might convince me to re-install Apple Maps. 😉
