Was I deceived at the official Apple store?

Hello! Today I bought a new iPhone 15 pro max 256 GB in the official Apple store in Bangkok. After opening the box in the store, the seller said that they would update the iPhone and connected the phone to the Macbook and after the process began I noticed that it was written “iPhone recovery mode, your mac is restoring the software on this iPhone.” It seemed strange to me, why did the new iPhone need to be updated via a Macbook and why did it say restoring and not updating? To my question, the seller replied that he was simply updating the iPhone software. I suspect that they sold me an already used refurbished phone. How do I know? It also seems to me that the phone gets hot quickly during normal short-term use.

Or, the seller just did the update in a weird way. Or, in the course of setting up the brand new phone, they made a mistake and needed to start over and the only way they could figure out how to do that was by putting the phone in recovery mode.

For what it's worth when you restore an iPhone using a computer, it always installs a fresh copy of iOS rather than updating the existing one. There are often times when this is useful. Perhaps the person doing the updating is of the school of thought that it's always better to do a clean install.
