AirTag “Last Seen” not updating despite being seen.

Hi,

My cat lost its collar w/ air tag (the cat is safe and well).

The AirTag says “last seen January 4th 11:57am” and is showing a few blocks from my house. I have lost mode/notify me when found on.

It keeps notifying me that it has been seen at that same location.

However, the “last seen” is not updating. It still says last seen January 4th, despite me getting the notification that it was just seen.

I am just wondering if this is normal (that the last seen is not updating). Or if this might suggest the AirTag was reset or something?

The AirTags rely on two things: Bluetooth & the Apple Find My Network, to function. The AIrTag has a Bluetooth beacon that transmits every 3-5 minutes (to save battery life). During that transmission any iPhone within Bluetooth range, with a number of specific options enabled, AND with an active Internet connection, can receive that beacon and rely its location to the Apple servers over the Internet. This is where you would see it with the Find My app on your iPhone.

So, as you can see, a number of things have to occur to make this work.

Thank you for your response. I understand how AirTags work. I’m asking if anyone else has experienced specifically what I am experiencing and if they can provide insights into what it might mean.

excuse me if I am missing this explanation in your response, but It seems like you are just explaining the basics of how an AirTag works, not providing any relevant information.

Based on your post, I tried to explain the potential reasons why your AirTag was not updating. I have no way of knowing how much you know about how the tags work. Only know that you were using one on your pet's collar. I can only assume that you did so, so you can track your cat.

I was just trying to set your expectations of using an AirTag for this as I see a number of posts here where folks are not happy with using them as pet trackers ... which these tags are not designed to do. Just trying to help.

Like I said, I appreciated your response. The post was fairly targeted asking for an explanation specifically about why the AirTag was pinging but not updating.

You provided no insights as to that question. Sure you gave accurate and helpful information about how AirTags work, but you never synthesized that information into something relevant to my question. Even with no information about my knowledge of AirTags, the question I posed does not call for the information you provided. It called for a specific answer to why something may not be updating. Without more, your post falls short of a satisfactory response.

I have no intention of being rude or ungrateful. It is just that this type of response appears to be a pattern on these discussion boards and is not helpful.

Additionally I find your comments about using AirTags for pet tracking to be petty and illustrative of how you missed the point of my question. I specifically said the cat was fine and well in the post. Your discussion regarding the use of AirTags for pet tracking was irrelevant. I’ve been using them for 2 years and have absolutely loved the way they work. This question is about an AirTag that is clearly acting faulty, not about the types of things I use my products for.

thank you again for your response.
