When selling, should you "Activate Mac" after erasing all content?
I have a MacBook Air M2 2023 that I am looking to sell.
I've reset it using the recommended process from this Apple doc: Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings – Apple Support (UK). That's worked and it's now on the "Activate Mac" screen (which appears to be part of Recovery Assistant). This is different to the typical "Welcome" out of box screen that you would get when you first switch on a brand-new Mac. I gather from Apple's article and a bit of Googling that this is expected after following the Erase All Content & Settings process though.
However, I'm not 100% clear as to whether I should be completing the Activate Mac process before I sell it, or if I should be leaving it as-is for the new user. My first inclination is that I should leave it as-is because anything with the word "activate" in it sounds like something the new owner should be doing. However, on the flip side, Apple's article suggests you should stop once you get to the Setup Assistant (AKA "Welcome" wizard) if you're selling it, which comes after the Activate Mac screen. That makes some sense as it would mean the new owner would then get the same "Welcome" / "out of box" experience you get when first turning on a brand-new device. However, if going through the Activate Mac screen would cause the device to be re-registered with Apple at all, that could cause issues for the new owner.
Prior to the reset a couple of weeks ago, it was running Sonoma with all available updates.
Any ideas what the best approach would be?
Any advice greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!
