iMovie download for El Capitan 10.11.6

Hi there, I'm running El Capitan on my mid 2009 Mac Book Pro quite happily. However, I just realised that I don't have iMovie and I need to transfer some old mini DV tapes from my camcorder using iMovie or a similar software to be able to capture the video stream from my Sony Handycam.

I went to the App Store in my Mac but it gives me an error message saying that iMovie requires a later version of Mac OS. I have other laptops that have the latest versions of iMovie but I wanted to get a compatible version for El Capitan.

Can somebody please help me with this query? How can I get hold of an old copy of iMovie these days?

Many thanks

MacBook Pro 17″, OS X 10.11

Adding to what Rich has said.

As you have iMovie on your newer Macs then you should have no problem downloading iMovie onto you El Capitan Mac.

The Purchased page is accessed in a different manner on El Capitan to that in Mojave (or later).

First off it might be useful on your newer Mac, ( Mojave or later ??) to open the App Store and click on your Account, which is your name bottom left . This opens your Purchased page and should show iMovie listed amongst other applications.

If iMovie is listed then this shows that iMovie is associated with the Apple ID that you just used to sign in to the App Store.

Now, on your El Capitan Mac in App Store click on the Purchased Tag at the top.

You will have to use the same Apple ID that you just used to access the App Store from your newer Mac .

You should see iMovie listed on this Purchased page and be able to download a compatible version for El Capitan.

It wont tell you what version it will download but will be 10.1.6 .

You can QuickTimePlayer to import your mini DV tapes to your Mac. It will come in as one large video with no scene breaks. Editing will be somewhat limited. You can split and trim, but not much more than that.

If you ever had iMovie 10 on your Mac, even though you may have later lost or deleted it, you can obtain the highest version of iMovie that your El Capitan operating system can run. Sign into the app store with the same Apple I.D. that you used initially to acquire iMovie. In your accounts folder you will see a list of your purchases, including iMovie if it were on your computer at time of purchase. You can download it from there.
