Still confused about iTunes Match

I don't subscribe to Apple Music. I also don't want my entire music library on my Mac synced to my iPhone. So I don't mind hooking my iPhone up to my Mac via USB to sync only the select tunes/playlists I want on my iPhone. Given this, do I need to be paying for iTunes Match?

No. iTunes Match does the same thing as Apple Music, and syncs all your music to the cloud.

If you just want to connect your device to your Mac sync selected tracks and albums, you don't need either service.
