Samsung Viewfinity S9 crashes my MayBook Pro when it goes to sleep

Hello guys,

first post here, I hope I did everything correctly. I got myself the new Samsung Viewfinity S9 monitor as an alternative to the studio display from Apple.

My problem with it is, that it keeps crashing my MacBookPro once it goes to sleep.

I managed to scrape a crashlog and post it here.

(sry not pastebin, since pastebin keeps deleting the crashlog... idk why...)

I am not that good at interpreting the code. Maybe some of you can tell me whats wrong with this?

My MBP is an Apple M1 Pro from 2021 with MacOS 14.1.2

You may now ask yourself: Why is this guy posting problems with his SAMSUNG product on the APPLE forum?

Easily explained: I am already in contact with Samsung and they try to blame it one the Mac. I already posted this to reddit but no one could tell me what exactly the problem is. So i try it again here with the real mac community :)

Is it the Mac or is the monitor the problem?

And if the latter, how I can tell the guys from Samsung that they need to fix their device...?

P.S. just a funny note: the monitor is also emitting coil whine. it is annoying af. The Samsung guy told me on the telephone "oh that is just because you have THE BEST tech on the market right now. there is just simply no way to handle so much POWER and DATA without making noise"..... yeah... sure..

I’m having the same issue with a Mac Mini M2 Pro and the Samsung Viewfinity S9.

I replaced my iMac 5K with this combination and I was blaming the Mac Mini. I was thinking mine was a faulty unit, because nothing had worked after having tried absolutely everything... but I had never thought that it could be related to the display, until I read your Reddit post.

Are you using the Thunderbolt cable provided with the display or another one? I had an Apple one and it’s the one I’m using. Maybe it’s stupid, but once I know the issue is caused by or related to the display, I’ll try with the Samsung one.

At the end, I think the issue can’t happen to every Mac and S9 owner. If that would be the case most of the reviews of the S9 would be all terribly bad. Probably neither of us would had acquired one. So I’m thinking there has to be an additional factor.

I hope the community may help!

Hey @loayza,

yes I am using the thunderbolt cable that came with the display. the display is currently in repair at samsung and it will come back today or tomorrow. I hope they fixed it but i have a gutfeeling that it will be the same.

I also heard that if you activate the developer macOS patches, that the issue is fixed in the preview version of macOS.

I will test both and report back here and on reddit
