Impossible to Update macOS

Hi :)

I have a MacBook Pro Intel based computer, where it’s impossible for me to update the OS. It’s currently stuck in Catalina.

I’ve tried everything:

  • complete wipe/delete of the hard drive and reinstall of the OS (where it then applies Catalina automatically). Even after this it still gives an error (something like “an error occurred during the initiation of the update) when trying to update the OS.
  • booted in safe mode and tried to update - it still gives the same error
  • Tried to update one step at a time, so starting out with big sur instead of Sonoma - the same error occurs. I’ve tried this in safe mode, normal mode and after a complete wipe and reinstall
  • tried to download the updates manually from the App Store - the same errors occurs

Any ideas of what to do?

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Exactly which MacBook Pro do you have?

The macOS version you can upgrade to depends on the year your Mac was released.

Click the Apple menu () at the top of your screen and choose About This Mac.

Check the compatibility of your Mac hardware with newer versions of macOS software:

➡️ macOS 11 Big Sur is compatible with the Macs listed here

➡️ macOS 12 Monterey is compatible with the Macs listed here

➡️ macOS 13 Ventura is compatible with the Macs listed here

➡️ macOS 14 Sonoma is compatible with the Macs listed here

It you are getting an error message that tells me that the file became corrupted during the download. Likely, you used Wi-Fi. When it is used for these very large downloads this is often the result. I suggest that you do another download using a wired Ethernet connection and it should go well. If that is not possible, then multiple downloads may be needed to get a clean one that will properly install.
