How can I update or use Photos ver 5 on my new macbookair

I have a MacBook pro 2014 updated to latest Catalina and I am trying to use a portable hard drive to store all my photos to be accessed by my new 2023 MacBook Air. I get a popup saying the Photos App is version 5 and can’t be accessed by the Air without an update. I haven’t been able to find a way to update. I have too much memory used in my photos for my new MacBook Air, hence the need to use a portable hard drive for storage.

nThe Photos app is part of the system so in order to get Version 5 you'll have to upgrade your MBP system to the same as you're running on your 2023 MBA. The MBA probably came with Sonoma so your only option to get both Macs to be able to use the same library is thru iCloud Library:
