Hi good people. I have an old Macbook air and it has hardly been used. I want to know how I can upgrade to a newer operating system and which one might be compatible. I don't need or want the latest of anything but just something a bit more compatible with Chrome and Netflix etc. Many thanks.

If you upgrade to Catalina or later,
If you can't upgrade as far as Catalina, Firefox 115 ESR might let you access some sites that have issues with older versions of Safari.
The Netflix site says that "You can use a Web browser to watch Netflix TV shows and movies on … Mac computers running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 or later" – so I don't know what incompatibility with Netflix you are running into now.

The macOS version you can upgrade to depends on the year your Mac was released.
Click the Apple menu () at the top of your screen and choose About This Mac.
