Macbook M1 Pro microphone gets muted when others talk on any meetings platform

When I am talking in a Google meet, Teams, Facetime, and another person starts talking at the same time, my mic gets muted, and that person does not hear me, only after he stops talking, my voice is recovered and after he can hear me again.

When I connect earphones, everything works fine. Everything works fine even when I put default microphone to macbook microphone, but output still leave in earphones.

I contacted support, they made me to check first aid, reinstall MacOS, start in safe mode, nothing helped, still same issue.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.2

Technically, two people can talk at the same time on FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, but it's not practical or recommended for a smooth conversation. Here's why:

Technical limitations:

  • FaceTime operates on a half-duplex communication model, where only one person can speak at a time, and the other person listens.
  • Google Meet & Microsoft Teams, like most video conferencing platforms, are designed for one active speaker at a time. The system prioritizes only one audio input at a time, making it difficult to understand both people clearly if they talk simultaneously.

A few potential solutions are:

  • When you want your voice to be heard clearly in a FaceTime call and other sounds filtered out, you can turn on Voice Isolation mode (available on supported models). Voice Isolation mode prioritizes your voice in a FaceTime call and blocks out the ambient noise. Use hand-raising or chat features to indicate a desire to speak. This allows the current speaker to finish their point before you interject.
  • Wait for natural pauses to jump in. This ensures everyone gets a chance to be heard without interruptions.
  • Temporarily disable any third-party audio or microphone applications in case they're interfering with the built-in mic.
  • In System Preferences > Sound, check the Input tab and ensure "Automatically adjust microphone input" is not enabled. You can also try setting the input volume higher.
  • Within each platform you use, explore the audio settings and disable any automatic features like noise cancellation or automatic mic gain which might be muting you.
