Duplicate listings in Music Library but NOT duplicate files

I had to buy a new Mac mini as my old 2012 iMac, although perfectly functioning, was no longer being updated (thanks Apple...). I copied my music library across from iTunes on the iMac to 'Music' on the new Mac mini and also had to copy across all my physical music files from the old machine to the new machine across Ethernet. Now my library in Music is displaying double tracks for every album. They are NOT being caused by duplicate files as if I check 'Get Info' on the library listing the file path is identical on both listings. I can't delete the listing because that deletes the file. How can I easily rebuild my Library so it just shows single track entry for each music file? It's a pain playing anything as it simply plays the same track again since it's listed twice. I've looked online for ways of clearing the library and rebuilding it but I can't find anything relevant, they seem to all refer to duplicate files which is not the problem I have.

Mac mini, macOS 14.2

See Duplicate songs in iTunes - Apple Community. You appear to have what I refer to as logical duplicates, two entries in the database pointed at the same physical file. You should delete the newest of these with sending the underlying file to the trash, which leaves the file there for the remaining entry.

See also Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Community in case the easiest solution is to revisit the library migration.

Hmm. I realise I wrote "with" when I meant to say "without", so apologies for that. You should get a prompt when to delete an item from the library, and that item is located within the currently designated media folder, if you would like to delete the file, or send it to the trash. As long as you answer no then the file should be left in place. If you sort exact duplicates by date added then as long as all the duplicates were created at one time it should be possible to select them, delete without sending anything to the trash, and leave behind the good copies. If the duplicates were created at different times that you might need to work in smaller blocks using the column browser as a filter, e.g. all artists beginning with A, then B etc. so you can scan the selection more carefully before you commit to deleting any entries.

Alternatively, as noted, see Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Community in case the easiest solution is to revisit the library migration. Using this method should not result in any duplication.

Or you can option-start-Music to create a new empty library and import the content if you don't require any of your playlists, ratings, play counts, etc. from the old library. See also Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community. If you're going to start over you might as well know where things are expected to live.

Thanks tt2 but I'm afraid this is not a workable solution for me. I have thousands of files and thousands of duplicate listings for those individual files so I would have to delete each duplicate listing then restore the file from trash then re-add it to the library. I was hoping Apple had a 'rebuild library' utility since I assume the library file is simply some form of XML. I'll phone Apple telephone support as the online support guys couldn't help me other than point me at online documentation I'd already looked at.

Hi tt2

Actually I was able to sort in blocks and delete from library without deleting the files. It's slow but at least I know I'll get there. Thanks for the advice. Much more useful than the information from Apple support who didn't actually even suggest this simple solution. The option they suggested involved re-indexing the music folder which didn't work.

Once again, thanks!

Cheers
