How to disable Auto Zoom on my iMac?

Recently, while working on my Mac 14.1.2, the screen has started to auto-zoom in when I move cursor. I suspect it maty have something to do with Accessibility, but am unable to find option to disable this annoyance.

it sounds to me that you have "discovered" smart zoom. you can go into System Settings > Mouse in the "Point & Click" tab and turn off smart zoom. if that was the cause, the unexpected zooming will stop.

but if that is what's going on, you may want to try and get used to how smart zoom works. since I've been using it, I have wondered how I ever lived without it. :)

Hi MurPhil,

Re: Auto Zoom : the screen has started to auto-zoom in when I move cursor.

Wondering if it is the Zoom that happens if you press command and whatever text the cursor is pointing to is enlarged as long as you hold down the command key ? (That feature can be useful if you understand how it happens, so that you are in control of it.) To turn that Zoom feature off:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Accessibility  in the sidebar,

then click Zoom on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)

2. Turn off Hover Text.

You can zoom in and out on the screen using keyboard shortcuts, scrolling on your mouse or trackpad, or tapping on your trackpad, and customise how the zoom area appears.

Hope this helps you find / turn off / the correct setting :-)

Thanks for the response to my sporadic auto-zoom-in problem on my Apple device. I've never come across a strange problem like this one before.

The Hover Text is never on. Is there possibly another hover setting somewhere in Apple or Google Chrome? Also, I've changed the Accessories zoom settings numerous times, but this has had no positive effect.

Everytime the auto-zoom-in happens, which is up to 4 times a minute depending how often I move the cursor with the moused, I have to manually reset it back to "Actual Size" from within my Chrome browser's View menu (it never seems to auto-zoom-out by itself!) This is very annoying, and possibly hints at a problem with Google or Apple, or integration of both?!

Auto-zoom-in only seems to happen on my iMac at the same moment I move the cursor with the mouse. But not every time! It is truly sporadic. Nor does it happen when I move the cursor via my Mac's keyboard. It doesn't appear to be a mouse "glitch" per se, because it still happens when I switch to my generic wireless mouse?! Note that this auto-zoom-in happens on my iPad too, even though I only use the on-screen keyboard on my iPad, instead of a mouse.

This was never a problem prior to doing the latest updates. Current versions are:

  • iMac
    • OS (Sonoma 14.3);
    • Google Chrome (V. 121.0.6167.85);
  • iPad
    • iOS (17.2)
    • Google Chrome (V. 120.0.6.6099.119)
    • Gmail (V. 6.0.231126).

I'm hoping for a simple solution to this problem - perhaps something simple that I may have missed!
