I am unable to send a message to my friends who do not have an iPhone most times. However on occasion it will go through to them. I am baffled. Please advise

These messages are sent using SMS, which is a cellular carrier function. Seek assistance from your cellular carrier.
As an aside, you might see some results from changing Settings in iPhone
and choose to use 'Cellular Data' where iMessages generally don't need it.
The cost then, is to use this Cellular Data to send SMS messages, if so.
Sometimes those messages will hang-up and not send unless this is done.
After that setting is used, you may wish to toggle Cell Data, back Off again.
Many plans might consume 'cellular data' with significant loss to you, then.
(If yours is Unlimited Plan, your carrier might cover that cost. Mine doesn't.)
