MacStudio M2 max - Dell S3422DW turns off after 20 seconds of lock screen

It says no signal and goes on standby mode. Tried multiple cables as well (dell hdmi to hdmi, third party hdmi to hdmi, hdmi to usb c, and display port to usb c). I believe this is by design from dell and not suitable for macOS users given the new dynamic lock screen feature! I have simply no idea what’s happening! And guess what, there is no mac compatible driver update for the monitor!

There is nothing wrong with your monitor, cables, or computer, this is normal behavior, it is a security feature according to apple to lessen the possibility of malware and tampering.

I have 2 S3422DWs and a Samsun 55" TV attached to my Studio and all respond exactly the same way when the system Locks. On the plus side the monitors restart quickly when you click the mouse or touch the keyboard to wake it up (unlike the TV). I have a 3rd S3422DW attached to my Windows PC as well as a 27" Dell monitor and they do the same thing when the screen goes to sleep. Best I can say is that "It's an Apple thing, it must be right, you're not supposed to understand, just accept it".

When you system locks other things can happen also, I have an Elgato Stream Deck+ and Stream Deck XL attached to my Studio, and both go to sleep when the video card output turns off or it goes into screen saver mode.

I'm not sure what the discussion is about 4K is about, the S3422DW is not a 4K monitor and was never designed to be, it's an ultra-wide monitor and will never display a 4K signal as it lacks the vertical resolution - max is 1440 vs 2160 needed for 4K.

You can go to the Settings > Lock Screen and change the timing of the Lock Screen. You can also go to Settings > Desktop & Dock and set a hot corner for locking the screen and other functions - located at the very bottom of the list. With the hot corners they apply to the corners of the total display area and not each monitor - if you have 2 monitors side by side only the outside corners respond, the inside/adjacent corners of the 2 monitors do not activate as hot corners. The same applies to any other monitor configuration where the corner of the monitor does not continue on to another monitor - it must be a corner of the entire display area to activate the hot corner.

First, "Drivers" as they are called in the Windoze world are not Drivers at all in the Developer sense of the word. They are merely display Profiles -- a basket of resolutions and refresh rates and related information for setting up a display.

The Mac has NEVER relied on side-loaded Profiles. Instead, the Mac queries the display directly over the secondary data channel, and gets a much more comprehensive profile (and the display-name) Directly from the display.

your Dell S3422DW appears to be a 3440 by 1440 display. This needs to meet the timing and data rate requirements of a 4K display, despite showing only the top half of a 4K display.

For inputs, that display appears to have a DisplayPort 1.2 and 2 HDMI 2.0 ports

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Displays (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet" --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets. it works great at its original resolution of 720i or 720p. At higher resolutions, it quickly develops issues that are complex to solve, and the cables and adapters required to solve are NOT intuitive.

Cables 'shipped in the box' are notorious for being "lowest bidder" cables, just good enough to keep you from immediately returning the product to the store.

USB-C to DisplayPort adapters must be sold as 4K capable or better, and the USB-C portion of the cable (before the bulge of the adapter circuitry) must be ONE meter or less.

the FRONT ports of the Mc Studio MAX model are USB-C only, limited to 10 G bits/sec, and are NOT suitable for high-end displays. You need to be using a BACK port.
