Why can't I download apps on my 2019 16" MacBook Pro when it is a compatible device?

I have seen this app downloaded on other laptops from the same year so why won't it work on mine? Specifically, an app called PT Content Master.

For starters, if you look up the app on the App Store you'll see that it's stated as "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS."

Second... further down under Information it is stated that Mac Compatibility "Requires macOS 11.0 or later and a Mac with Apple M1 chip or later."

So there's that.

  • Apple Silicon M-series processors in Macs are scaled up from A-series ones in iPhones and iPads. The M-series ones may be faster, but they're running the same type of machine code.
  • The Intel processor in your 2019 MacBook Pro runs a completely different kind of machine code. So an app that's compiled for the Apple Silicon processors found in iPhones and iPads – and only for them – would be gibberish as far as the Intel processor in your MacBook Pro is concerned.

Note that the first Apple-Silicon-based Macs came out in 2020. Apple did release a mixture of Intel-based and Apple-Silicon-based machines in that year. For example, they released an Intel-based MacBook Air in March – then replaced it with the M1-based MacBook Air in November.

Get an iPad?

You might contact the developer and ask about it.

The developer doesn't have the power to make an ARM-based iPhone or iPad app available for download to Intel-based Mac owners in the App Store.

So the point of contacting the developer would be to ask for a native Mac version …
