Apparently, you don't need to do anything. Apple says it will be installed automatically when the keyboard is connected to your mac.

It would be done automatically.

Though it is not clear to me if this would be issued independent from Other Security Updates to macOS / iOS

About the security content of Magic Keyboard Firmware Update 2.0.6

I can say with great certainty my Magic Keyboard from Apple is running the 2.0.6 Firmware

To check your system

Go >> Utilities >> System Information

Go in sidebar Bluetooth and check

My problem was that the Apple article apparently did not apply to MacOS Monterey,

The Article you are mentioning makes no reference as to what version of macOS it applies to, be it Sonoma., Ventura or Monterey

Though it does provide Specifics as to the Apple Bluetooth Keyboards that do qualify for the Firmware 2.0.6 update

" Available for: Magic Keyboard; Magic Keyboard (2021); Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad; Magic Keyboard with Touch ID; and Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad "

as far as checking the firmware version. You have shown how to check that (and many other things) with this System Information utility. Thank you!
