New predictive text issue on iPhone mini.

I’m using an iPhone 12 mini and since my last upgrade the predictive text function has changed so that I now have to hit a tiny x to cancel the option that the phone offers. In practice I can maybe hit that x one in 10 times, so instead I have to go back and rewrite the word enough times that it stops trying to change it. It is very frustrating, why change from the old system of simply tapping the word that you want, thus providing a much bigger target - especially useful on small phones?
