Why is my predictive text feature grayed out on iPhone?

When I go to keyboard settings the predictive text settings is turned off or grayed out and now Apple wants me to use ChatGPT which I tend to find unpredictable when trying to use. I have difficulty spelling with Asperger’s spelling and find the dictionary is far more precise. How do I turn it back to the original settings?

Hi Jon-se11,

Re: "When I go to keyboard settings the predictive text settings is turned off or grayed out"

Wondering: whether you may need to update your iOS version to iOS18.2 if you haven't already

(NB wise to back up iPhone data first if updating)

or

✽ whether restarting your iPhone may help (ie: deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes, and often restores order if something is not working as expected.

or

✽ if available in your country : whether you just need to turn predictive text on ?

Apple support's online article for iOS18 Use predictive text on iPhone - Apple Support

says

"Note: Inline predictive text may not be supported in your language. See iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability." (Tip: Look under "QuickType Keyboard" for predictive text features)

Article also says:

"Turn predictive text off or on

  1. While using the keyboard, touch and hold or .
  2. Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn Predictive Text off or on.

When you turn off Predictive Text, iPhone may still try to suggest corrections for misspelled words. To accept a correction, enter a space or punctuation, or tap Return. To reject a correction, tap the “x.” If you reject the same suggestion a few times, iPhone stops suggesting it.

Note: Turning off the Predictive Text setting turns off both predictive text and inline text predictions."

All the best :-)

Thank you kindly for trying that, and also for sharing what happened!

Re: I tried it but then found out it had to do with an 'Intelligence & Siri ChatGTP extension' setting.

In iOS 18.3 : Seems we have the choice to keep Apple Intelligence on by default, or to turn it off. (Apple support has videos available on YouTube

if you'd like to know more about it: Eg: paste "Apple support + Writing Tools with Apple Intelligence" in the search bar at the top of a YouTube webpage.)

After you turned off predictive text: Seems Siri is offering the ChatGP extension (to use with writing), which you can choose to set-up or sign out of. That's new! Am as surprised as you :-)

Apple Support's article below may help explain more about it

Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence on iPhone - Apple Support

Eg: Describes the various features you can choose:

Also says how to: "Turn ChatGPT off

  1. Go to Settings , then tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  2. Tap ChatGPT, then turn the ChatGPT extension off.

If you want to prevent Siri from suggesting ChatGPT when you make a request, turn off ChatGPT, then turn off Setup Prompts.

or

To block access to ChatGPT, see Block access to ChatGPT."

Eg says:

  1. Go to Settings , then tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, then turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Tap Intelligence & Siri, tap ChatGPT Extension, then tap Allow or Don’t Allow."

For finding out about About Apple Intelligence, and all of the features:

See Get started with Apple Intelligence on iPhone - Apple Support

or

If you want to turn the whole of Apple Intelligence off:

You can go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap the button next to Apple Intelligence.

Seems you can just turn Apple Intelligence off:

Go to Settings  > Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap the button next to Apple Intelligence.

The way I understand it: If AI is not turned off :

new features download with iOS 18.3, and AI is automatically turned on

You can choose earlier iOS versions at the top of the article below for the most accurate info.

Jon-se11 ~ Although 82% max capacity is above Apple's recommended 80% level for battery replacement, your iPhone 11 Pro Max could be 5 years old. As such, its original battery is likely degraded from age & recharging cycles — causing the issues you're seeing. So consider battery replacement soon, rather than be forced at a later, perhaps inconvenient, time:

Update to my post on predictive text on iOS.3 it’s grayed out ( this on a iPhone 11 Pro Max) but it’s permanently turned on but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m not sure whether apple will fix this on iOS 18.3.1 which is due to be released later this month. Thanks

Jon-se11 ~ An old model iPhone with a weak, aging battery can cause a variety of intermittent issues. So...

Does your iPhone 11 Pro Max still have its original battery?

And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...
