Apple News cannot verify WSJ subscription

I have a Wall Street Journal subscription and have been using Apple News to read WSJ articles for a while with no issues. Occasionally I’d be blocked from an article and I could fix it by clicking on the “Already subscribed to The Wall Street Journal?” link, and then entering my WSJ login info on the screen that pops up.

For the past few weeks, when I click on that same link, the login page attempts to load for about a second, then crashes and Apple News presents me with this error message:

Couldn’t Verify - your subscription couldn’t be verified because there is a problem with the server or network. Please try again later.

Clearly trying again later doesn’t work (I’ve tried every few days for about a month).

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

technical details:

• accessing on iPhone 14
• fully up to date software
• have tried on WiFi and 5G
• WSJ account login works fine on WSJ website and app
• WSJ login is email account based, not through either the Google or Apple account connection
• i do not subscribe to Apple News +
• Other non-WSJ subscriptions work just fine in Apple News (ex. Wired magazine)
