Apple News: The Athletic subscription "There's a problem with the server or network"

Have tried 50 or so times in both the iOS news app and desktop macOS news app to login to my The Athletic account (owned by NYT now), and Apple News attempts to redirect to "nytimes.com" and immediately dumps be back to "there's a problem with the server or network". Been this way at least 4 or 5 weeks. Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same issue as you and have spent almost the entire morning with two advisors who don't have a clue about what the problem is or why it is happening. It's a farce. I went through the rigmarole of ending my subscription that was tied to a gmail account, making a new account and subscription via Apple ID and Apple Pay at their instruction, for it then to not work and the advisor to just end the conversation with me. New advisor is saying they don't have a clue as they are only "iOs trained". Apple sort it out, honestly this is an utter joke.
