Save file to external hard drive

I can save a file to my iPad Air without an issue, but when I plug in my external usb while I can see what’s on it and pick the folder I want to save my document to the save button is greyed out. I don’t get a message do you trust this device. So not sure how to do this

Why won't my iPad show my external drive in Files? Historically, I've been able to connect my external drive to my iPad and browse the stored files under the Files app. More recently whenever I connect it I can see that the drive is powered on but I can't access anything on my iPad. Why did it suddenly stop working? I've never formatted it for a PC and as far as I know it still connects to macbooks.

"Files" won't open files on a USB drive. I have a USB-A drive I created on a linux system. I've used an adapter to attach it to my 5th-gen iPad Pro. Under Files I can see the drive and navigate the directories, but when I try to open a text file by tapping on it, it only shows the file size, but not the contents of the file. For instance, I get a black screen that says "128 KB" in the middle, but no file contents.

Determine the issue was the external drive was formatted NTFS once I switch to a format that was supported it worked fine
