There are many types of printers – but I would suggest getting one that supports AirPrint. With AirPrint, there's enough "stuff" built into the printer that macOS can print to it without a separately-installed driver. In the past, printer manufacturers have not always updated their drivers for new versions of macOS, so it's good if you don't absolutely have to rely on them for new drivers.

Hi,

Since the Canon TR8520 is listed as an AirPrint model in About AirPrint - Apple Support (which makes the printer compatible with macOS including Sonoma), have you checked whether anything in the printer settings could explain any unwanted two-sided printing? You may want to have a look at the TR8500 series (PDF) User Manual (Mac) found via https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-tr8520 (-> Manuals). Once the manual has been opened, try (for example) to search the PDF for "duplex" and "two-sided".

You may also want to make sure that the printer firmware has been updated.

Hey there!

The Canon PIXMA TR8520 appears to be a fairly recent printer that supports AirPrint.

Just to be sure I understand your issue correctly, does your printer only print double-sided, even when you don't want it to?

I'd suggest trying to troubleshoot the issue. To start, you can reset the printing system on Mac: Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem - Apple Support. Then, re-add the printer: Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac - Apple Support.

I'll reiterate and add to my previous reply.

The "best" printer is one that meets your printing needs. An AirPrint printer is a good choice if it meets all your other printing needs. You mentioned printing both sides in your original post, What about other needs such as:

  • paper size
  • cardboard stock
  • laser/inkjet/other printer type
  • printer footprint
  • front load
  • side load
  • rear load
  • speed
  • copy functionality
  • color/black and white
  • paper capacity
  • ink reservoir type/capacity
  • connection type
  • remote access
  • etc.

We do not know your printer needs so can not tell you which printer is best for you.

The best printer for you is one that meets your printing needs. We do not know what those needs are. Do a search for brand name printers then select the one that best meets your printing needs.
