Buying AppleCare+ for refurbished Macbook

I am aware that there is a 60-day period after the purchase of a Macbook where Applecare+ can be purchased/subscribed. Is this the same case for Apple refurbished products? Or can Applecare+ only be bought at the same time as the purchase of the refurbished product?
