How to toggle between characters on an Apple CSA French Canadian keyboard

I purchased a MacBook Air with a CSA (French Canadian) keyboard. How do I toggle between the characters, especially on the keys that contain three characters. Also, using the shift key displays the appropriate character and sometimes it does not. Thanks for any suggestions!

The 3rd character is made via the Option key.

To make sure the output matches what is printed on the keys, go to system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > input sources and make sure there is only ONE item on the list, and that the name of the item is Canadian CSA.

On an older system you go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources
