Contacts' message, call, video and email icons greyed out.

I have an iPhone 12 running the latest iOS software 17.2.1 and I noticed that when I select any contact, the icons below the contact name for calling, messaging, video calling and emailing are all greyed out and hence inactive. What could be the cause of this?
