MacOs Sonoma made my Mac slow

I’ve recently updated my MacBook Pro 18 from Catalina to Sonoma.

I have had Catalina on my Mac for the longest and never had any issues with this MacOs version, my Mac has always been pretty fast even tho I run big files and apps like Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro. I most of the time even run both apps at the same time I’ve never had issues with the computer being slow.

A few days ago for whatever reason I decided to update my Mac and I feel like it was the worse decision I’ve made lol, My Mac literally became so slow and laggy. even by opening simple apps like Apple Music or Safari the computer starts lagging and most of the time the app crashes, I have to ā€˜force quit’ and ā€˜relaunch finder’ every time.

If you're considering updating your Mac to Soloma I wouldn’t recommend it.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.0

The computer should be relatively quick

As for " even by opening simple apps like Apple Music or Safari the computer starts lagging and most of the time the app crashes, I have to ā€˜force quit’ and ā€˜relaunch finder’ every time. "

A lot of steps to follow in below or just the the Last Step >> Etrecheck

I am sure we ( collective we ) may be able to stop something causing these issues

Suggest the User starts with the Top Suggestion and test.

Thereafter,  move down to the next and test again.

Keep on going in the Order that they have been presented or until you reach the Final Suggestion

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet "  and is  only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer Hardware / Software used on this computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

I believe I do have a SSD on mine tho

if you indeed do have 100% flash storage, i'm thinking you should download and run the free version of EtreCheck so we can see if you have some software installed that is causing your issue. make sure you give "full disk access" to etrecheck. Learn how to use it by reading Using EtreCheck. if you need help interpreting the report, you can see how to post the report here by reading How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report. and it automatically obscures sensitive things (like serial numbers) so you don't have to worry about sharing the report here.

if I had to guess, your Mac is equipped with either a rotational HDD or a Fusion Drive. that is usually the case when we see performance drops after upgrading to Big Sur and later. those drives do not perform well on modern macOS.

if that is the situation, the most cost effective way to speed things up would be to get an external SSD and install and run macOS from it. to implement that, please see Use an external SSD as your startup disk with your iMac or Mac mini - User Tip.
