I want to save photos to my external hard drive but cannot figure out how to do it. I don't know where to find the photo file to copy or send to my hard drive. It's probably something simple

If you mean your Photos library then in Finder open pictures and look for the "Photos Library". Copy and paste to external drive.

Hold Option or alt key when selecting Find to Find All. from the results you can right click on the file & choose REveal in Finder, then copy it or move it to another Finder window open tothe external drive.
