why does a channel strip fader in the lowered position not attenuate the volume of the track?

How do you turn OFF the Garageband metronome during playback? When I uncheck the metronome during playback, it doesn't shut if off. I recorded the track w/ the metronome running so I'd record my part in perfect time but the blasted thing won't shut off when I want to just hear the instrument played back.
