Wondering if the start-up screen is just "zoomed" out, so the log-in field is too tiny ?

If so: check out Apple Support's online article (link below) for the available options to Zoom in

eg: keyboard shortcuts, scrolling on your mouse or trackpad, or tapping on your trackpad

I'd suggest starting in Safe Mode, then follow the advice provided by brbo. Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support
