UM-1G MIDI not recognized by Garageband?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Yamaha P95 with midi capabilities and a UM-1G cakewalk midi cable. I have downloaded the driver and got it all working (i.e. when I test the midi output in utilities-audio MIDI setup, the light blinks). However, when I go into System Preferences and Sound, it tells me I still only have one Input on my computer, the built in microphone. And when I try to use the keyboard as a MIDI controller in Garageband, I go to Preferences, Audio-Midi, and under Audio Input I have two options: Built in, and System Settings, neither of which are the MIDI keyboard. On that same window however it says 1 MIDI device detected, but how do I tell Garageband that THAT'S the input I want to use??

This has all just been very frustrating. Thank you for any help.

that is correct, MIDI ≠ Audio

that is correct

you don't, it's automatic, you should be able to create a software track and play

I had only been using Grand Piano so I tried a bunch more and they aren't working either. From seeing someone else use MIDI input I remember that the musical typing keyboard, when she tried to open it was "greyed over" and couldn't be used, but that's not the case here. Yesterday when I was trying to get this to work they were greyed over, but the MIDI keyboard was still not working. And today, they are no longer greyed over.

I don't know if any of this information is helpful, I figured I'd just give as much as I can. Thanks for your attention!

My Mac is a MacBook Pro, (if that's what you mean? ). I was using the USB port that's closest to the screen - when I switched it to the other one, closer to me, garageband popped up and said "The number of MIDI inputs has changed. Now no inputs are available." And when I put it back to the first one, it says "Now one input is available."

And I have no other USB devices connected to the Mac.

On the keyboard itself, no, there aren't any MIDI controls - just the two ports in the back. The only place I've seen channels are in Audio MIDI setup, where I click on the UM1G icon and it takes me to a window that tells me it can transmit and receive 16 channels.

This "juice" problem - Is there a way around that? Or is it just a case of the computer not being fast enough? It's relatively new, I got it in February...
