Epub compared to pdf

I would like to zoom in and out on the epub books

This is very easy to do with pdf ebook but I cannot do so with epub

On comparison to pdf format I find pdf easier to read , search, navigate, annotate etc

So why do we need epub, mobi etc ?

PDF is essentially designed for printing on standard sizes of paper. It's not really suitable for digital books that need to be read on a large range of screen sizes. Epub lets the reader choose the font, font size, and number of words per page and is thus normally the standard for ebooks. As far as I know, Apple does not accept pdf in its book store.
